This procedure is often performed when another surgery is already being performed – concomitant surgery.
A common type of this procedure is called MAZE surgery which is a treatment for atrial fibrillation.
The procedure is somewhat similar to catheter ablation; the surgeon uses radiofrequency energy or electrocautery to disconnect cardiac circuits that cause the arrhythmia.
