Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization (TMR)

  • This procedure is mainly suitable for coronary artery disease patients who have already had bypass surgeries and are no longer able to get another one, or patients for whom surgery is too high risk, and despite all the treatments, they continue to suffer from angina.
  • If this procedure is usually done along with another cardiac surgery, the incision is made in the middle of the septum. If it is done as a primary procedure in itself, the incision is made on the left side of the chest.
  • The laser device is placed directly over the cardiac tissue that requires revascularization and pulses of laser beams are administered at several places on the tissue.
  • Once the tissue heals, there is new capillaries generated (angiogenesis) which helps improve blood flow to the starved tissue once it heals.
